Fusing Consumer Fireworks Cakes

Cakes (also called repeaters or multi-shots) are the backbone of consumer fireworks displays. Learning to fuse them properly creates seamless, professional-looking shows.

Legal Note

Consumer cakes come in 200g and 500g sizes. Never exceed the legal limit in your area. Always check local regulations before fusing fireworks.

Materials Needed

  • Visco fuse (green, yellow, or red)
  • Aluminum tape or masking tape
  • Sharp scissors or fuse cutters
  • Nail or awl for poking fuse holes
  • Lighter or torch
  • Safety equipment

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare Your Cakes

  • Remove any plastic wrap but keep the top paper intact
  • Identify the main fuse location (usually on the side)
  • Arrange cakes in your desired firing order
  • Ensure stable placement on flat ground

Step 2: Plan Your Sequence

  • Consider cake duration (usually printed on the label)
  • Decide on overlap or sequential firing
  • Account for different effect heights
  • Mix colors and effects for variety

Step 3: Connect the Fuses

  • Cut connecting fuse to calculated length
  • For direct connection: tape fuse directly to cake's main fuse
  • For delayed connection: add appropriate fuse length
  • Ensure at least 1 inch of overlap for reliable ignition

Step 4: Secure Everything

  • Use aluminum tape for best results (heat-resistant)
  • Tape down all fuse connections thoroughly
  • Create a fuse leader for safe ignition
  • Double-check all connections

Advanced Techniques

Poked Fusing

For instant ignition, poke a hole in the side of the cake near the first tube.

  1. Use nail to make hole above first tube
  2. Insert fuse directly into cake
  3. Tape securely around entry point
  4. Creates zero-delay ignition

Chain Fusing

Connect multiple cakes in sequence for continuous action.

  1. Start with fastest-burning fuse
  2. Connect cake to cake directly
  3. Add delays only where needed
  4. Test timing with single cakes first

Safety Tips

  • Never stand directly over cakes when fusing
  • Keep cakes at least 20 feet from spectators
  • Secure lightweight cakes to prevent tipping
  • Have water or sand nearby for emergencies
  • Never attempt to relight a cake that didn't fire completely
